Australia’s David Andersen registered an NBA career high 19 points on 9-from-14 shooting today as the Houston Rockets upset Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers in California, 101-91.
Andersen added six rebounds to his points haul and finished the game with new career highs across seven categories.
The Frankston product had surpassed his previous career high in scoring, an 11-point output against Dallas last week, by half time on 6-of-9 shooting that included 1-of-2 three-pointers in a blistering thirteen minutes off the bench.
He saw no court time in the third quarter but closed out the fourth quarter shooting 3-from-5 as the Rockets held on against a Lakers team determined to win on its home court.
Houston point guard Aaron Brooks led all scorers with 33 points while ex-Rocket Ron Artest had 22 points to lead Los Angeles.
The Rockets have now won 6 of their first ten games and are running second in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference behind the Dallas Mavericks (7-3).
The Lakers (7-3) are in second place in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference behind the surprising Phoenix Suns (9-2). Atlanta leads the Eastern Conference with an 8-2 record.
In other NBA news, former number one draft pick Andrew Bogut had 19 points with 11 rebounds in a 129-125 Milwaukee victory over the Golden State Warriors yesterday. The Bucks are 5-and-2 and lead the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. Bogut is averaging 15.9 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
Nathan Jawai, the first indigenous Australian to be drafted to the NBA, scored 2 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists in Minnesota’s 87-97 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies yesterday. Jawai has been elevated to the starting lineup of the 1-and-10 Timberwolves and his averages have risen to 5.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Patty Mills, who was drafted to the Portland Trailblazers in June, is still rehabbing a broken bone in his foot and is yet to return to the court this season.

Jacob Holmes and Liam rush and Steven Weigh have been brought into the side for tonight’s clash.
Brown has had to make six changes to his squad, most forced on him with several players either returning to or joining overseas-based clubs.
Dallas Mavericks’ big man Nathan Jawai has headed back to his NBA club.
Olympians Joe Ingles and Brad Newley, who top-scored in the two games against New Zealand, have flown to Europe to join clubs in Spain and Turkey respectively, while Aron Baynes is linking with Lithuania’s Lietuvos Rytas.
Forward Worthington, a late scratching from the New Zealand series with a heel injury, is unavailable, while guard Adam Gibson has been rested.
Brown has picked three debutants in 17-year-old AIS guard Hugh Greenwood, towering 208 centimetre Sudanese refugee Ater Majok and Swedish-based swingman Liam Rush.
“We are filling those spots with another crop of young players” said Brown, who has worked with around 60 players since being appointed following the Beijing Games.
“We want to see if James Harvey can be a lightning rod off the bench, whether Matthew Dellavedova can be a point guard for the Boomers in the future, whether A.J. Ogilvy can be a legitimate prospect in a talented group of Australian bigs, whether Liam Rush can be that lock-down defender that Sam Mackinnon and Jason Smith used to be, and whether Ater Majok can compete for a regular place in the team.
“This is the final piece of our program for 2009 and we’re going to finish it like we started, reaching out to players to find out what they can and can’t give us, and that starts on this tour tomorrow against Turkey.”
Ater Majok, a Sudanese-born Australian, will debut for the Boomers alongside former Sydney Spirit swing man Liam Rush and 17-year old Tasmanian Hugh Greenwood.
Turkey will field a strong side headlined by NBA players Hedo Turkoglu and Ersan Ilyasova as it gears up for the 2009 EuroBasket international basketball competition.

The Opals will play China, who finished fourth in Beijing, in Canberra, Geelong and Dandenong on August 11, 17 and 21 respectively.
The series forms part of Australia’s preparation for the 2009 FIBA Oceania Championship against New Zealand on August 31 (Wellington, NZ) and September 2 (Canberra), with the winner qualifying for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for women.
It also provides the Opals with an opportunity to level the ledger with world number six China, who defeated Australia 2-1 in a three game series in China in May.
“China is a world class basketball playing nation and we wanted some tough matches before the Oceania Championship, so we’re very happy to have secured these games,” Opals Head Coach Carrie Graf said.
“We’ve toured China and Europe this year so it will be great to play in Australia and hopefully the Aussie public will come out and get behind the Opals.”

Well its been an interesting day in this years NBA Draft. For many people on Aussiebball it has come as a bit of shock that Patty Mills ended up getting picked so late in the second round of the draft. Before Mills injured his wrist playing for St Mary’s, many rated him as one of the best guards in the NCAA. But oh how things can change, never the less he has been draft to the Portland Trail Blazers at pick 55.
So what dos the futurte hold for Mills, if you look at the cases of Nathan Jawai and Brad Newley, don’t expect to see Mills playing many minutes in the NBA
. That being said, Portland did not pick up any other guards in the draft but he will need to battle off against Jerryd Bayless, Steve Blake for a roster spot which isn’t all that bad. Thats all of course provided he does not get traded to another team, which is quite common.

In the lead-up to the National Basketball League (NBL) Finals series, fans will now be able to watch two extra blockbuster games with major playoff implications LIVE after FOX SPORTS extended their broadcast coverage.
FOX SPORTS have announced that they have added LIVE coverage of the blockbuster Victorian local derby between the South Dragons and Melbourne Tigers on Australia Day (26 January) and the South Dragons versus Adelaide 36ers clash on 4 February to their schedule.
Both games are expected to play significant roles in determining the final make-up of the top six for the NBL Finals, which commence on 18 February.
The Dragons-Tigers derby is expected to be a pre-game sell-out on Australia Day, with tickets for the clash between the Tigers (currently third) and the Dragons (first) at the 3,500-seat State Netball Hockey Centre already a hot commodity. A crowd of 9,308 packed Hisense Arena earlier this season on 18 October to witness the two bitter rivals go head-to-head and the Dragons run out 108-80 victors.
The newly-announced coverage of the Dragons-36ers clash at Hisense Arena will also be highly-anticipated. The 36ers are desperately holding on to the sixth and final playoff berth, whilst the top-placed Dragons are looking to secure the minor premiership and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.
LIVE coverage of both games will commence on FOX SPORTS at 7:30 PM AEDT.

Patrick Mills hit a long 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds remaining and finished with a season-high 31 points and cold-shooting Saint Mary’s held off archrival Santa Clara in a thrilling final minute for a 63-62 win in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools Friday night.

Well the rumor mill is going in over drive, for over 2 weeks there has been issue regarding Julius Hodge being paid by the 36ers, but then today it was announced that the 36ers and Julius had sorted out the money issue and in fact that Julius had even been paid in advance, at least according to 36ers owner Mal Hemmerling.
But Julius did not front up for the game vs the hawks, and both the coach and owner of the 36ers have come out with comments saying Julius will not answer phone calls.
To add fuel the fire, Julius appeasr to have made a blog post on Tuesday talking about his recent NBL outing, while also mentioning he could play in the NBA with 15-20 hours of flight time.
